Six pieces of advice for those who use an ergonomic office chair

The design of the chair unites its function and ergonomics (how comfortable it is for its user), as well as functional requirements as size, volume, flexibility, weight, durability and solidity, stability to pollution and vision.

If we have a chair with such a design we will enjoy physical comfort and correct body position no matter how much time we spend at the office. Still, to possess an ergonomic office chair is not enough. It is also necessary to adapt to the individual proportions of the body. Prior to choosing an office chair you have to decide the desired height, according to the height of your desk or working place. This decision depends mostly on the type of work and the possibility the user of the chair to be unusually tall. The height of the working place defines the possible positions of the chair. And once your place in the office was fixed, pay attention to the following basic rules:

  • First, sit comfortably on your chair, as closer to your desk as possible, so that the upper parts of the arms are parallel to your spine. Put your arms on the working place. Adjust the chair if the elbows are in a position different than 90 degrees angle.
  • Check whether you can easily put your hands/fingers under your knees, as you are sitting on the seat. If there is more than a finger distance between the seat and the legs you should lift up the chair as well as your desk.
  • If it is hard to put your fist between the back side of the calf of the leg and the front of the seat it means that the chair is uncomfortable. In that case you can move forward the backrest, support your back with a pillow or change the chair with another one.
  • While you are sitting, your body should stick to the backrest without any effort from you. You should not slide down or stoop.
  • Look ahead while you are sitting comfortably and close your eyes. Then slowly open them.It is best if you look straight at the centre of your monitor. If the level of the monitor is higher or lower you will have to adjust it to reduce the neck tension.
  • The under elbows are a necessary part of your chair. They will reduce the tension in the shoulders and the neck if you use them. They will also prevent stooping while you are sitting.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE SUITABLEOFFICE CHAIR?

To work in an office means to spend most of your time sitting –this is a position which causes stress and tension in the back and allthe body. That is why to avoid these problemsit is important to have anergonomic office chair that helps the correct body position andphysicalcomfort during working time.

What kind is the most ergonomic chair?

There aremany types of ergonomic chairssuitable for the office. Noneof them is by all means the best ergonomic chair /one/. The followingvery importantaccents could help everyone find the most appropriate office chair forhis/herpersonal needs. This also relates not only for the traditional officechair, but for all its alternatives, which may be preferred by people spendingmorethan 8 hours a day at their working place.

There are a few things/specifications every ergonomic chair should have/possess/:

  • Height of the seat: The height ofthe chair should be easily adjusted. The most appropriate for morepeople height is between 16 and 21 inches (40,60 up to 53,30 cm).
  • Width and depth of the seat: The width and depth should ensure the needed comfort to anyone. Usually the standard is 17 – 20 inches (50,80cm). The depth of the seat should be enough, so that the back is comfortably placed on the back of the seat in the position where there is space of 2 – 4 inches (10.16 сm) between the back of the knees and the seat of the chair.
  • Support for the back: The support of the lower part of the back and waist is very important. The spine has an inward curve and sitting for a long time without support causes spine problems and often changes the natural curve of the spine and the back.
  • The backrest: It should be 12-19 inches (approximately 48 cm) wide. In case it is separate from the seat its height and angle should be adjustable. In case the seat and the backrest of the office chair are combined in/as one, then the backrest should be adjustable by angle forth and back with a stopping mechanism, preventing the over bending if the person has already chosen the most comfortable for him/her position.
  • Materials: They should be thick and soft enough to provide comfort when sitting for long periods.
  • Elbow and arm - rests: Movable and adjustable they should enable arms and shoulders rest. The upper part of the arms and the elbows will be in a comfortable resting position while the wrists and the lower part of the arms are busy writing on the keyboard, for example.
  • Mobility: The preferred office chair should help you reach every corner of the office and turn you by 360 degrees to reach the desired aim without getting up from it.
